Events

Sardinia offers cultural, religious and folk festivals, fairs, exhibitions, theatre performances, concerts, sports and shows all year round. Many of the festivals are free of charge and attract a great number of people.


We suggest you to take a look at the agenda below:

  • January: Saint Anthony\'s bonfires celebrated on January 16th in almost 50% of Sardinian towns. In some towns such as Mamoiada, the celebrations of the Carnival begin;
  • February: celebration of the Carnival in Oristano with the Sartiglia, Bosa, Cagliari, Fonni, Gavoi, Lode\', Lodine, Lula, Mamoiada, Marrubiu, Nuoro, Ollolai, Olzai, Oniferi, Orani, Orotelli, Ottana, Ovodda, Samugheo, San Gavino Monreale, Santu Lussurgiu, Sarule, Tempio Pausania;
  • March: Carnival conclusion with the traditional pentolaccia. Very representative is the horseback pentolaccia of San Vero Milis. The artichoke festival in Giba, the citrus festival in Muravera; Sant’Antioco’s festival in the homonymous Island;
  • April: celebration of the Holy Week in Alghero, Cagliari, Castelsardo, Cuglieri, Iglesias, Oliena, Orosei, Santu Lussurgiu, Scano di Montiferro. Particularly, “Su Scravamentu” is celebrated in Baressa and Morgongiori, while S’Incontru in many other Sardinian towns and cities. Sant’Antioco’s festival in the homonymous Island, Sa die de Sardigna held in Cagliari and many other Sardinian towns; the Cus Cus festival (Cascà, a traditional dish of the African Island Tabarka) in Carloforte in Saint Peter’s Island; the nougat festival in Tonara during Easter Monday;
  • May: Saint Efisio festival in Cagliari, the Sardinian horse riding in Sassari, the traditional horse race in Porto Torres, the tuna fish festival in Portoscuso, “Sa Festa Manna de Mesu Maju" in honour of Saint Simplicius, the Patron Saint of Olbia and Gallura territory; Festival of music and words Abbabula in Sassari;
  • June: Corpus Domini celebrations in many towns and cities; Girotonno in Carloforte in Saint Peter’s Island; important art exhibitions in the most important Sardinian towns.
  • July: The procession of the Candelieri in Sassari and S’Ardia in Sedilo; Sciampita – International folk festival in Quartu Sant’Elena; Festival of the Madonna of the castaway in Villasimius with the sea procession of decorated boats; on July 22nd in La Maddalena the great procession in honour of the Saint Patron Mary Magdalene is held; the Sardinian carpet Fair in Mogoro; the harvest festival in Turri; the Sardinian knives exhibition held in Guspini-Montevecchio; Calagonone Jazz festival held in Cala Gonne-Dorgali; Narcao Blues held in Narcao; Rocce Rosse & Blues in Tortolì-Arbatax, held between July and August; Musical and Grandi Eventi Soul & Mare, held in Cagliari from July to September;
  • August: celebrations and seafront processions for the Assumption of May in many coastal centre; the procession of the Candelieri in Sassari, Nulvi, Ploaghe; Sant’Ignazio festival in Laconi and the Festa del Redentore in Nuoro; in Santadi on the first Sunday of the month a marriage is celebrated in respect of ancient traditions. Celebrations begin in the morning with the wedding procession, consisting in people dressed with the traditional Sardinian costumes who perform traditional chants and dances, followed by the “traccas”, the traditional and festively decorated carts of the bride and the groom with their respective witnesses. The Sardinian carpet festival is held in Samugheo; “Ai confini tra Sardegna e Jazz”, held in Sant’Anna Arresi between August and September; “Time in Jazz” in Berchidda; “Musica sulle Bocche” in Santa Teresa di Gallura; “Rocce Rosse & Blues”, held in Tortolì-Arbatax between July and August; “Musical e Grandi Eventi Soul & Mare”, from July to September in Cagliari; the International Festival of vocal Music held in Cagliari.
  • September: the race of the barefoot boys in Cabras and the festival in honour of the Patron Saint Helena held in Quartu Sant’Elena, with traccas, people dressed in the traditional Sardinian costumes, horses, dances and chants; every year in Selargius the ancient Selargino wedding is celebrated; “Ai confini tra Sardegna e Jazz” held in Sant’Anna Arresi; “Musical and Grandi Eventi Soul & Mare”, held in Cagliari from July to September;
  • October: Saint Francis Festival held in Lula; the chestnuts festival held in Aritzo; Festival of the ancient Music, held in Cagliari;
  • October, November and December: Autumn in Barbagia and Cortes Apertas in about 20 towns of the territory of Nuoro;
  • November: Festival of the Madonna dello Schiavo (the Madonna of the Slave) in Carloforte in the Saint Peter’s Island; suggestive celebration for the commemoration of the dead in some towns; for instance, in some towns of the territory of Nuoro donations are traditionally collected during the festival “Su mortu mortu”; the same festival is known as “Maria punta \'e oru” in Santa Giusta; “La Montagna Produce” is held in Desulo; the chestnuts festival held in Aritzo; the “European Jazz Expo” in Cagliari;
  • December: Saint Silvestro feast day and New Year\'s Eve celebrated in Alghero, Cagliari, Castelsardo and Olbia.
